EDC Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the entertainment capital of the world — a neon desert city of casinos, mega-clubs and spectacle that hosts EDC, North America's largest dance festival, at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway each May. By night the speedway becomes an electrified city of its own: eight stages, carnival rides, art cars and 170,000 ravers per night under the desert sky. The Strip is the world's most famous boulevard of mega-resorts, and Vegas is also the gateway to the American Southwest's most dramatic landscapes — Red Rock, the Hoover Dam, the Grand Canyon and Valley of Fire are all within 90 minutes. It is the only festival where you can see a Cirque du Soleil show, lose $100 at blackjack, watch the sun rise over the desert, and dance until dawn — all in the same night.

Getting There

Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) is on the Strip — 10 minutes by taxi. EDC shuttles run from the Strip and downtown to the Motor Speedway (30 min) for festival ticket-holders.

Best Time

May for EDC; March–May and Sep–Nov for pleasant desert weather. Summer days exceed 40°C; winter nights drop near freezing.

Currency

US Dollar ($). Cards accepted everywhere; tipping 15–20% is expected.

Language

English. Spanish is widely spoken by hospitality staff.

Getting Around

The Strip is walkable but long — the monorail, Deuce bus and rideshare cover it. EDC shuttles or a rental car (for day trips to Red Rock, Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon) are essential.

Top Attractions

The Las Vegas Strip
01

The Las Vegas Strip

The 6.5-km stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard that is the most famous street in entertainment — Bellagio, Caesars Palace, the Venetian, the Luxor pyramid and the Strat tower. Watch the Bellagio fountains dance every 30 minutes, ride a gondola through the Venetian, and see the Eiffel Tower replica at Paris Las Vegas. The Strip is a theme park for adults, best explored on foot at night when the neon blazes.

Fremont Street Experience
02

Fremont Street Experience

Downtown's covered pedestrian mall — five blocks of old-Vegas casinos (the Golden Nugget, the Four Queens) under a 460-metre LED canopy that hosts nightly light shows and free concerts. Fremont is the 'Vegas Vintage' experience — cheaper, louder and more authentic than the Strip. The SlotZilla zip line flies the full length of the canopy.

The Neon Museum
03

The Neon Museum

A 2-acre 'boneyard' of retired Vegas neon signs — 200+ restored signs from the 1930s to the 2000s, including the original Stardust, Moulin Rouge and Sahara. By night the signs are illuminated for a guided tour through the history of Sin City's neon glow. The museum is 15 minutes from the Strip and one of Vegas' most photographed sights.

Red Rock Canyon
04

Red Rock Canyon

A 80-km scenic loop through 190-million-year-old red sandstone formations — the most dramatic landscape within 30 minutes of the Strip. Hike the Calico Hills, rock-climb at Wilson Cliffs, or just drive the loop at golden hour when the rocks glow fire-red. Red Rock is the locals' escape from the neon and the desert's answer to the Grand Canyon's grandeur.

Hoover Dam & Lake Mead
05

Hoover Dam & Lake Mead

The 221-metre concrete arch dam that tamed the Colorado River in 1936 — one of the Seven Civil Engineering Wonders. Tour the power plant, walk the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge 270 metres above the river, and take in the scale of Lake Mead, America's largest reservoir. 45 minutes from the Strip.

The Sphere
06

The Sphere

The newest wonder of Vegas — a 112-metre-tall, 366-foot-wide spherical LED venue covered in 1.2 million hockey-puck-sized lights. The exterior shows a giant eye, the Moon, the Earth and whatever else the artists dream up. Inside, the 17,600-seat auditorium wraps the audience in 16K immersive video. It is the most futuristic venue on Earth and visible from across the valley.

Valley of Fire State Park
07

Valley of Fire State Park

Nevada's oldest state park — 18,000 hectares of 150-million-year-old bright-red Aztec sandstone arches, beehives and petroglyphs, 60 minutes north of Vegas. The drive through the park (Elephant Rock, the Seven Sisters, Fire Wave) is one of the most photogenic in the American Southwest. Go at sunrise or sunset when the rocks live up to their name.

Grand Canyon West (Skywalk)
08

Grand Canyon West (Skywalk)

The closest Grand Canyon rim to Las Vegas — 2.5 hours by car or 45 minutes by helicopter. The glass-bottomed Skywalk juts 21 metres over the canyon's edge, 1,200 metres above the Colorado River. The Hualapai Reservation's West Rim is nearer than the South Rim (4.5 hours) and offers the only glass-bridge view of the canyon. A helicopter tour from Vegas lands at the canyon floor.
